accepting our character

connecting deeply

The aim of these group gatherings is to encourage each of us to free the body and mind and connect deeply with ourselves. Together we create a safe environment where you can explore your creativity, and have fun with melody, words, breath and movement. You are encouraged to find your voice, whether spoken or sung, and to experience the gongs, handpans, drums, and rattles. There is no right way, and it is impossible to get it wrong. In this way, we can begin to accept this I that is my character, while not taking it too seriously.

Group Gatherings with Frances Sarah Turner

During these gatherings, I introduce many different approaches to sound, silence, breath and movement, and make use of a wide group of methods and exercises. Each gathering has a theme, usually connected with the time of year and the natural cycles of life. With the theme in mind, I remain flexible to your needs and tailor what I do according to what arises.

Group Gatherings: See the Events page for details of upcoming gatherings.

A breathing structure of curving lines
That bend and pulse in sync
Around a living core.
A singing pattern of melodies,
Holding the fire of life
Lightly contained
Within the boundaries of the me, myself, I.

Flexible but non-negotiable,
A contract crafted on conception
Playing out its song.
And I can learn its pathways
Free the spaces in-between,
So that my secret hidden fire
Can shine its beauty.

If I deny its truth and look for more,
Or if I try to float off into endless light,
It calls me back,
A bonding beat of sweet insistence,
That this fire must flare in tune,
And that the richness of life right here on Earth
Is all I need.

Songs of Renewal, July 2025

There’s something cooking underneath,
Reluctantly I wrench my thoughts
From work, from lists, let thinking cease,
And banish all those wretched oughts.

What is this thing? Is it a howl?
I feel a tension gathering.
Is sadness knocking? Or a growl
Of anger I am smothering?

Just let it out, express the truth
Of what within me wants to speak,
Give it free rein and let it loose,
Allow intensity to peak.

Then let it go, no holding on,
No going round and round to ride
In useless circles, go beyond
And sense what’s rising next inside.

For then my incoherent words,
My scribbled feelings wildly blown,
Start to express a wider curve
That takes me somewhere quite unknown.

gatherings

sound, breath, qi gong & poetry

There are many ways to connect with that deep place in ourselves that we know to be true. Voice work using poetry, song or improvised sound is a very powerful way to bypass the thinking mind and get straight to the core of where we are at. I use simple exercises that give us a jumping-off point. It could be a poem or a song, or simply one phrase or word from a poem or song. It could be sounding your own name, or simply making a freely improvised sound or movement and seeing where it goes. As you get used to this work, you are encouraged to bring your own jumping-off point.

As we sit in circle and work together, a space of great safety is created, where we can let go of old holding and step forward into the unknown. This opportunity to have your work witnessed within the group is often a deeply powerful and satisfying experience.

The moment when she dares to step forward
And sound her soul into the universe,
Revealing that which, with its own intent
Takes her and runs full tilt, to that new place
Beyond the known she never felt before.

To see that manifesting beautifully,
A flowering full of joy and pain and grief,
Touches my heart with some mysterious force
That lifts and opens, gifts me with a view
Of rolling fields and gentle sunlit hills.

Her sound is mine, her joy my joy, her pain
My suffering, as we together stand
In circle, join our hands and feel our strength,
Our softness and our truth. This day we dance
A song of deep communion and love.

join together

shamanic fire ceremony

After the sound, breath, qi gong and poetry gatherings, there is an opportunity to join together in community around the fire. These are sacred fires in the Inca tradition, created with love and consciousness, and are a method of shamanic healing.

These sacred fires are usually held at key points in the calendar, for example, the winter and summer solstices, spring and autumn equinoxes and the festivals in between (Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas and Samhain). They are also held according to the moon calendar, particularly at the full moon or the new moon.

After our group gatherings, we usually share some food, then prepare for a sacred fire. You do not have to stay for the fire. You can also come only for the fire if you prefer. The fire is a community event, and there is no charge.

Somehow, this time it’s different.
The fire is made and waiting,
And in a sudden dusk hush
Of absolute stillness,
It is time.

I call the winds silently
From where I am, sitting on the step.
Exactly
Where I am.

Then light the fire.
The paper flares. Will the kindling catch?
I watch it with detachment.
It will, or it will not.

It flames up one side,
Dancing and shimmering –
Will the whole thing join?

It will, or it will not.

And as I watch,
It drops gloriously into the centre,
Taking me with it,
As the fire takes hold from the inside out,
And roars its song to the universe.

Then breathes
In steady spreading

Before falling to ember.

One stick,
A lizard, black against red,
Held aloof.
The flames start to lick
Up and down its back,
Licking my spine,
Consuming.
Will these flames be enough?
They will, or they will not.

After an age
The lizard drops
with a sigh.
The fire is done.

And in the morning,
The lizard stick
has turned entirely to ash,
Just visible still, for a moment
In silvery outline.

Healing Circles with Frances Sarah Turner

self-healing

healing circles

There is a lot of misunderstanding and mystique around healing. For me, healing is about catalysing the self-healing process that is within each of us. I am very fortunate to have been gifted many ways of doing this during my life, and to have worked with them for many years.

These circles are for practitioners of any discipline working with patients who are open to looking clearly at the energetic aspect of our work. We share some of the healing methods we find useful, often in a hands-on, practical way, and also discuss some of the difficulties we encounter and the ways we can meet them. I can offer knowledge from the Egyptian healing tradition, from the Chinese tradition of acupuncture, qi gong, dao yin and daoist meditation, and from the Inca tradition of shamanic healing.
